About “Barcode”

Although most of my paintings are easily recognizable as representational, abstract design qualities more often than not play a subtle but significant role. “Bercode” is actually based on a photograph which was the victim of a printing malfunction but immediately intrigued me with its potential. The challenge was to extend each color from the top fraction of the Cambridge Beaches landscape as it crossed the imaginary horizontal line into abstraction in the lower portion. The resulting painting is almost blindingly (and not so subtly) abstract and yet simultaneously born of realism.
